SHORT BIO

“Terell Stafford is the guy you need if you want toe-tapping, body grooving jazz music. Well-respected by his fellow band mates and highly sought after by club owners, Stafford is one of the best trumpet players available today.”

Born in Miami, Florida and being raised in Chicago, Illinois meant Terell Stafford had the opportunity to grow up in some of the best jazz communities in America. Due to being apart of these music centers from an early age, Stafford went on to pursue his love of all things music by getting a degree in music education from the University of Maryland in 1988 and a degree in classical trumpet performance from Rutgers University in 1993. While he focused on classical trumpet playing, Stafford eventually focused on jazz.

This focus on jazz trumpet playing leads to Stafford joining the University of Maryland jazz band. After this, his jazz career rocked to stardom, as his skills quickly impressed well name jazz musicians like McCoy Tyner, Christian McBride, John Clayton, Steve Turre, Dave Valentin, and Russell Malone. Stafford had the amazing opportunity to play on stage at Carnegie Hall, the Rosie O’Donnell Show, You Bet Your Life and The Tonight Show.

With over 130 album performances, Terell Stafford is one of the most sought-after bandmates to have on a jazz album today. He was even apart of the Grammy-nominated album Tailor Made, a legendary jazz album by jazz giant Bobby Watson. In 2009 Stafford was even a member of the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra when they were awarded a Grammy for their ensemble Live at the Village Vanguard. Stafford went on to perform for the Grammy-nominated albums Fourth Stream…La Banda, Brother to Brother, New Song and Dance and Overture; Waltz & Rondo.

Stafford currently is the Director of Jazz Studies and Chair of Instrumental Studies at Temple University. He founded the Terell Stafford Quintet, and in his spare time is the active Managing and Artistic Director of the Jazz Orchestra of Philadelphia (JOP).
