Feature Friday with Bassist Martin Wind

  • If you could play any other instrument, what would it be?

I STARTED OUT PLAYING THE GUITAR, BUT REALLY FOUND MY VOICE THE INSTRUMENT THAT REALLY RESONATES WITH ME WHEN I GOT HOOKED UP WITH THE BASS. BOTHI ELECTRIC AND ACOUSTIC HOWEVER. I ALWAYS WISHED THAT I HAD BEEN A BETTER PIANO STUDENT AND WOULD HAVE STAYED WITH TAKING LESSONS AS A TEENAGER: NO OTNPR INSTRUMENT OFFERS THE SAME POSSIBILITIES OF DISCOVERY ORCHESTRATION AND EXPRESSION

  • Who is your biggest inspiration?

SOME OF MY DEAR MUSICIAN FRIENDS THAT HAVE BEEN FORTUNATE TO WORK WITH AND CALL MY FRIENDS: GUITARIST ULF MEYER WHO IS FROM MY HOMETOWN IN FLENSBURG. GERMANY – WE’VE BEEN PLAYING TOGETHER NOW FOR ABOUT 30 YEARS AND HAVE BEEN BEST FRIENDS EVER SINCE DRUMMER MATT WILSON. WHO CONTINUES TO AMAZE ME WITH HIS LOVE FOR MUSIC, PEOPLE AND LIFE IN GENERAL. MY NUMBER ONE ROLE MODEL: BASSIST, ARRANGER, EDUCATOR AND COMPOSER JOHN CLAYTON, WHO HAS BEEN GUIDING ME AND LEADING BY EXAMPLE SINCE WE MET IN 1989 AND MY NEIGHBOR HERE IN TEANECK. NJ WHO HAPPENS TO BE ONE Of THE MOST UNIQUE AND BRILLIANT MUSICIANS OF OUR TIME: SAXOPHONIST SCOTT ROBINSON NO MATTER WHICH SITUATION HE FINDS HIMSELF IN – HE WILL ALWAYS SOUND LIKE HIMSELF – REMARKABLE.

  • What is one positive thing that has come from staying at home during the pandemic?

I’VE SPENT MORE TIME WITH MY FAMILY, HAD A CHANCE T0 RE-ORGANIZE MY OFFICE, LEARNED T0 DO HOME RECORDING, ALREADY GOT TO COMPOSE SEVERAL NEW PIECES AND ARRANGEMENTS, AND SPENT MUCH LESS TIME BEING STUCK IN NYC TRAFFIC OR AT THE SECURITY CHECKS AT NEWARK AIRPORT.

  • If you could visit anywhere in the world, where would it be?

I WOULD LIKE TO VISIT MY FAMILY AND FRIENDS IN THE NORTH OF GERMAN; I’D ALSO LOVE TO GO TO ITALY. PROBABLY MY FAVORITE PLACE TO VISIT, TOUR, AND EATI

  • What's your favorite animal, and why?

MY ALMOST 15 YEAR OLD LAB/PITBULL MIX CALLED “MAYA”, WHO IS UNFORTUNATELY NOT DOING VERY WELL. SHE HAS THE GENTLENESS OF A LAB AND THE TOUGHNESS OF THE PIT. AND SHE AS LOYAL A FRIEND AS ONE COULD EVER HOPE FOR.

You can hear Martin Wind play as part of the Bill Cunliffe Trio on Night is Alive’s Holiday Album, “Christmas in the Dog House”, available for purchase now at NightIsAlive.com!
